This theory teacher is turning out to be pretty cool. We’re doing some basic classical counterpoint and I think it’s going to help my writing a lot. I always wanted to learn how to compose and I have these ideas about trying to express things with music, but I just don’t know HOW to do it. I’m hoping this stuff will help with that. I’m also starting to understand that harmony comes out of melody, not the other way around like it seems when you’re improvising over a set of chord changes. I wonder if I can figure out how to apply real counterpoint when writing I’m composing jazz. I wonder if I’ll ever know enough to write something for orchestra. At least I have access to the resources to try to learn how.
